As a UK transplant from the US, I find that life as an expat is like reliving childhood. I’m constantly relearning English, discovering new wonders (like the British tax system), and being reminded that I can’t always get what I want (including the grocery chain, Trader Joes, and episodes of Unsung).
‘Nuance’ is one of my favourite words. Seemingly insignificant things can make a big difference, and I enjoy exploring life’s subtleties. This comes in handy in the ambiguous world of consumer insights.
I don’t like bubbles, unless they come with a wand. I learned early on that humans often become socially and physically isolated in our own worlds. This led me to become interested in bursting barriers by examining how diverse groups live, think, and feel.
My professional background is eclectic, however, each experience has involved two key skills — listening to people’s needs and implementing strategies based on those needs. These experiences have included:
- Aiding in marketing and promotional campaigns across several industries
- Handling logistics by coordinating television and film productions, assisting in shipping for an industrial recycler, and planning a Silicon Valley tour for a group of foreign officials.
- Writing everything from business reports and grant proposals to news articles, press releases, and scripts.
- Contributing to placemaking by interning at my hometown’s city planning commission, conducting community analysis at a research institute, and promoting neighbourhood initiatives in the former epicentre of the 2008 foreclosure crisis.
